School History

Living Word Christian School opened its doors 36 years ago in 1983 with 3 teachers and 21 students. Pastor Gary Ward from Living Word Church was approached by a woman in the congregation who was interested in there being a Christian school in Manhattan. Many at Living Word Church were feeling that the messages being conveyed to their children at school was often not in accordance with God’s truth. She attended a seminar on Christian Education in Texas and brought back information to Pastor Gary. He said he took several days to study the information and after reading through the literature he felt even more committed that this is what the church was called to pursue.

He shared this conviction with his congregation and Living Word Church embraced this vision for a Christian school in Manhattan. The church members recognized that educating children in truth is a biblical mandate with the parents having this primary responsibility. They felt led to partner with Christian parents. Living Word Church stepped out in faith to organize Living Word Christian School at that time.

Their vision was:

*to be open to children from all the churches in Manhattan

*that a tuition would not be charged

*and that the school would promote Christian values and principles

By 1994 the student body had grown significantly and the sole financial responsibility for the school had become a substantial burden for 1 church to shoulder alone. At this time Flint Hills Christian School became a community Christian school operating independently of the church.

As plans were being developed the 1995 - 1996 school year was spent in temporary facilities split between two local churches: elementary students at University Christian Church, and the 7th - 12th grades at Grace Baptist Church. During this time the current facility was being completed and the new 24,500 square foot building for the 1996 fall term. There were 130 students from 30 area churches and were employing a staff of 16. In 1997, a pre-Kindergarten class was added.

In 2012, the Catterson Family Science Building was opened which greatly enhanced the science curriculum, offering new and expanded teaching and lab facilities. With a focus on continual improvement; facilities, curriculum and technology have been greatly upgraded over the years.

In 2006, the community of Green (north of Manhattan) elected to use a vacant public school building to start up a sister school under the organizational umbrella of Flint Hills Christian School. This school is currently operating with students in Kindergarten through 8th grades and has two full-time staff members. In 2016, Flint Hills Christian School at Green became a fully independent entity and was renamed Green Christian School.

Through many times of blessing and challenge, God has been faithful to walk with us and lead us. Because of the generosity of many donors we have been able to operate at lower tuition costs than most comparable schools in this part of the nation. It is part of our vision to be able to continue this ministry of providing academic excellence with a Biblical foundation, all with the support of Christian homes, churches, and community.

Flint Hills Christian School is accredited by ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) and by Cognia (formerly AdvancEd).
